Martin Luther King Day

Origin & History:  Every time he went out of his house he probably knew that his life was in danger. He had already suffered jeering, bombing, stabbing, and stoning, but he never gave up. Violence had overcome the many missions that he had done before though. The violence got so bad that he was shot and killed outside of his hotel on April 4, 1968 in Memphis, Tennessee by a white man. His race was considered as a minority group. The white people treated the blacks as if they didn't matter. he gave a speech and here is a part of his famous speech. " I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up, and live out the true meaning of it's creed: We hold these truths to be self- evident; that all... are created equal." " Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere."

Date celebrated: In this year of time It will be celebrated on January 15, 2005

Reason for celebrating: He was shot and killed by a white man because he was black, and wanted to change the way they treated blacks. On January 15 he was born and they celebrate the holiday on his birthday. In November 1983,President Reagan signed a bill that made Martin Luther King Jr. ‘s birthday a legal holiday.
Ways celebrated: Some schools get out of school for this holiday. 

Foods eaten during celebration: None that I know of.
Interesting Facts: Everyone thought he would become a preacher when he was born. He did become a preacher eventually, but he went to Morehouse College before he became a preacher. He also won the Nobel Peace Prize. Mohandas K. Gandhi once said and agreed with Martin Luther King  Jr.'s ways of trying to make the world a better place, " Nonviolence is the first article of faith. " stated Gandhi.  Martin Luther King Jr.'s headstone says, " FREE AT LAST, FREE AT LAST But death is a slave's freedom... And the construction of the world W
