On Friday, August 27, 2010, Brown Elementary School hosted its first annual Boo-Hoo Breakfast for pre-kindergarten and kindergarten students and their parents.

The purpose of the Boo-Hoo Breakfast is to help first-time students make a smooth transition into independence in the school environment. During the first week of school, parents walked in with their children to the classroom and cafeteria. Brown Elementary School staff members were on hand to encourage students as they worked on getting to the cafeteria and to class independently. By the end of the week, the new pre-kindergarten and kindergarten students were more confident and comfortable making their way down the hallways to class and the cafeteria.

Approximately one hundred students, siblings, and parents attended the Boo-Hoo breakfast where they were served donuts, coffee, and milk. Leigh Anne Barber, Brown Elementary School Counselor, read a poem and spoke briefly to parents about independence and the caring environment at Brown Elementary School. Valencia Ray, Brown Elementary School principal, was also on hand to share about the small, nurturing environment at Brown and explain morning drop-off procedures.

“The Boo-Hoo breakfast was a great way for the parents who have a Kindergarten or Pre-Kindergarten student to get come to Brown and enjoy breakfast. It was a positive experience and everyone seemed very happy getting to be a part of the greeting breakfast. I believe bringing parents into the school is the best way for student success. It takes a strong connection between home and school for students to feel comfortable and successful,” commented Leigh Anne Barber, Brown Elementary School Counselor.
