The WISD Education Foundation is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization run by an all-volunteer Board of Directors from the Whitehouse community. It began in May, 2014 with a mission to support educational excellence, promote innovation in teaching, and enhance educational programs consistent with the goals of the District, and partner with the community to enrich the quality of education for all students in the Whitehouse school district. The goal of the Foundation is to enhance and enrich educational opportunities for students while supporting staff for their innovative efforts and recognizing them for exemplary teaching. The Foundation accomplishes these goals by raising charitable funds from the community and using those monies to fund innovative teaching initiatives.
The grants funded this year are in addition to seventeen (17) grants, totaling $22,000, that were awarded last December for the 2014-15 school year. Those grants ranged from in-classroom technology to traditional teaching resources and impacted the education of several thousand students in forty-seven (47) classrooms.Teachers are selected to receive these grants through a thorough and unbiased grant application and evaluation process. Foundation President, Micheal Lavender, noted that the impact from grants awarded in 2014 exceeded expectations of the Board, the District Administration, and the Foundation’s outside consultant, which has helped over one hundred foundations in their first year. He stated, “the outpouring of support from individuals and businesses in Whitehouse has reminded us of the emphasis this community puts on supporting our teachers in their tireless efforts to spark curiosity and creativity in our students’ minds.”
The Foundation looks forward to awarding this year’s grants later this fall. The community is invited to join the Foundation in its effort to provide more opportunities in the future to our innovative teachers. Please find more information on how you may help at www.wisdef.org
