Identification Process

  • Students may be nominated for the Gifted and Talented Program for the following year by teachers, counselors, parents, or other interested person(s)
  •  Nominated students and their parent(s) will be contacted to determine if the students are interested in the program 
  • Written parental consent will be obtained before any special testing or individual assessment is conducted as a part of the screening and identification process. All student information collected during the screening and identification process will be an educational record, subject to the protections set out in policies.


Kindergarten screening

  •  All kindergarten students are given a verbal, quantitative, and nonverbal reasoning test. 
  • Creativity and portfolio samples will be completed on all students nominated. 
  • Teachers and parents will complete an inventory on nominees.

2nd grade screening 

  • All second grade students are given a verbal, quantitative, and nonverbal reasoning test. 
  • New qualified students are invited to participate in a creativity test and portfolio samples are collected. 
  • Teachers and Parents will complete an inventory on nominees.

Grades 1, 3, 4, 5 screening 

  • All nominated students will have the opportunity to participate in the screening process.

Selection Committee

  • A selection committee will evaluate each nominated student according to the established criteria and will select those students for whom gifted program placement is the most appropriate educational setting. 
  • The committee will be composed of at least three professional educators who have received training in the nature and needs of gifted students and shall be established at each campus.

Assessment Schedule

  • All Kindergarten students will be screened, and if qualified, will begin services on or before March 1.
  • Assessment for nominated students grades 1-5 will be conducted in May.
  • Parents and students will be notified in writing upon selection of the student for the gifted program. 
  • Participation in the program is voluntary, and written permission of the students and the parents will be obtained before a student is placed in the gifted/talented program. 
  • Families and staff will be informed of student placement and given opportunities to schedule conferences to discuss assessment data.
