Dyslexia Information & Resources

WELCOME!

Here in Whitehouse ISD, students identified with dyslexia are instructed by teachers who have been trained to deliver the MTA or Multisensory Teaching Approach developed by Margaret Taylor Smith.

Multisensory Teaching Approach - MTA

DYSLEXIA PROGRAM GOAL
The district believes that all students deserve the opportunity to maximize their potential.  In order to address the learning needs of students with dyslexia, Whitehouse ISD (WISD) has developed the WISD Dyslexia Plan. Students experiencing difficulties learning to read, write, spell despite conventional instruction, adequate intelligence and sociocultural opportunity shall have access to programs and services that are appropriate to their educational needs.

The Texas Education Code (TEC) §38.003 defines dyslexia in the following way:

(1)    Dyslexia means a disorder of constitutional origin manifested by a difficulty in learning to read, write, or spell, despite conventional instruction, adequate intelligence, and sociocultural opportunity.
(2)    Related disorders includes disorders similar to or related to dyslexia such as developmental auditory imperceptions, dysphasia, specific developmental dyslexia, developmental dysgraphia, and developmental spelling disability.

The identification and intervention process for dyslexia can be multifaceted. These processes involve both state and federal requirements that must be followed. There is a single evaluation pathway that goes through the Special Education Referral process for the evaluation, identification, and provision of services for a student with dyslexia. After assessments and reports are completed, an ARD committee meeting will be held to review the results. The ARD committee meeting members will decide what services, if any, are needed. The law that applies to an individual student is determined by data and the student’s individual needs.
